Yoga Class Descriptions

The following descriptions will help you find the right class for you.  All yoga classes at Lighten Up Yoga are based in the Iyengar Method and include asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breath control), and relaxation.

General Back Care: Designed to relieve stiffness in the hips, spine and shoulders, improve posture, relieve stress and live well. Also recommended for students who want or need a progressive approach to the yoga poses. Please no baggy pants.

Novice & Back Pain Relief: Learn a simple time-tested routine to promote strength & stability. A gentle therapeutic class for people who suffer from back pain or other neuromuscular discomfort.

Yoga for the Complete Novice: A special 5-week course designed for the complete novice. No need to feel lost, foolish or out of place. Join this class if you have no yoga experience. Ideal for new students or ongoing students who like a slower, more gradual approach to yoga. Learn the basics of posture and breath in the Iyengar method. We will help you explore the wonderful path of yoga.

Yoga for MS and Other Conditions: For everyone who requires a gentle therapeutic sequence of poses. These sequences will stimulate healthy organ function and rest the nervous system. Ideal for persons with fibromyalgia, heart disease, cancer survivors, or those who are simply older and slower. Instructor Lillah Schwartz, E-RYT

Therapeutic Yoga (this class will resume fall 2008): Designed for people who have limited mobility or other physical challenges. This class will provide students with the extra assistance they need while giving them the camaraderie of a small group setting. Recommended for people who may have chronic back or neck pain, infertility, chronic fatigue, obesity, high blood pressure, heart problems, or who may have other physical limitations and need a gentle therapeutic class. Yoga After 50: A Well-rounded class to keep your body and mind healthy and flexible. Poses in all categories will be practiced and adapted to individual needs. Open to all ages.

Open Studio Practice : Enjoy the light, spacious studio, yoga wall, and all our props during your personal practice.  Everything you need for a peaceful and rejuvenating practice.  Love offering of $3 - $5 requested.


Iyengar Level 1: Learn basic asanas (postures) and pranayama (breath regulation).Good choice for new students or those new to the Iyengar Method.

Iyengar Level 1 and 2: is a more challenging class for students with some experience and those new to the Iyengar method. Build strength as well as flexibility. Includes a range of standing postures, twists, chest openers, and simple inversions.

Iyengar Level 2 and 3: is recommended for people with an average of six months yoga class
experience. All categories of asanas including headstands, shoulder stands, backbends and pranayama will be practiced. Progressions will be offered depending on a students experience and ability.

TGIF Yoga! (Thank Goodness It's FRIDAY!): Do you spend all your week looking forward to Friday? Now there's a brand new reason to TGIF! Bring a friend, stretch away the week's stress, and then go out on the town! Start off a relaxed and energized weekend with Friday night yoga. Level 1 and 2.

 

 

Kirtan with Chaitanya
Kirtan is a traditional yogic expression of heartfelt love and devotion to the Divine through song. Chaitanya is a group of musicians dedicated to sharing the joy, healing, & blessings of Kirtan with everyone who is drawn to it. Harmonium, guitar, bass, tablas, mridunga, & tamboura are the instruments which create the accompaniment for the chants. Members of Chaitanya have been hosting Kirtan in Asheville since 2001.
