230 hour RYA Program

"Your body
exists in the past and your mind exists in the future.
In yoga they come together in the present."
-B.K.S. Iyengar

The Program

The Institute training consists of 9 specific weekends in one year at Lighten Up Yoga and Healing Arts Center in Asheville, NC. The program will follow the method outlined in "Yoga the Iyengar Way" by Silva, Mira, and Shyam Mehta, and other books written or inspired by Yoga Master BKS Iyengar. Also included is home-study in pose execution, curriculum design, yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology.

Home study requirements include 6 hours of yoga practice weekly along with a minimum of 4 hours of reading, asana studies, and journal keeping. Home study is evaluated through journals and assignments. Whether you have already begun teaching yoga classes or are preparing to teach, you will find this course to be educational, practical, and inspiring.

Peer teaching and one-on-one mentorship for growth in verbal and teaching skills is considered to be one of the more intimate and valuable aspects of the course. Each weekend will include a focus on peer teaching. You will receive ongoing support and contact between sessions.

At the successful graduation from the Institute, you will have a solid foundation in yoga as a lifestyle and a new community of friends. You will have a clear sense of how to lead a successful class and how to address the needs of a diverse population; and you will have an understanding of your own strengths and gifts as a teacher.
